I was just driving down Center St. in Kingsport and while at a red light I was looking around as we all do. Well to my HORROR I saw this little old lady laying face down on the sidewalk in front of the post office (which is right across from the police station). I assume she had fallen and there were several people around her, but no emergency personnel. From the amount of people around her it was obvious that this isn't something that JUST happened and I can promise you that the fire department could have been there and for goodness sake a police officer probably could have walked there (yes the station is THAT close). So I decided to call 911...it seriously took 8 or 9 rings for the operator to answer and then I told her what I saw and where it was...she pauses and then says "where was this at?" so I told her and then she said "Yeah OK I'll let someone know." I hung up thinking WHAT??
So the moral of my blog is that I know that 911 operators are supposed to remain calm in the face of chaos, but could she at least of sounded like she might respond to my call with a sense of urgency?
It's the social loafing. There was an incident where a woman was viciously being beaten/raped by a man just outside her apartment building. When the people in apartments heard her screams they began to turn on lights and that scared her attacker away. But they all just assumed that someone ELSE would call the cops and slowly each of them turned off the lights and went to bed. The guy came back and killed the woman. > > It's really sad, but it's a psychological thing apparently. 911 operators hear the worst sides of life, eventually they just become so numb and dead inside like we all do. -Rakuen
